Kansas men’s basketball team has been awarded a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and assigned to the West Regional with an opening round clash to be played against Howard University on Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.
KU’s fate in the upcoming NCAA Tourney was revealed on the annual Selection Sunday Show on CBS. Alabama received the overall No. 1 seed; KU the third No. 1 seed of four.
If KU wins Thursday it would meet the winner of the Arkansas-Illinois first-round game on Saturday in Des Moines. The Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games of the West Regional will be in Las Vegas.
UCLA is the No. 2 seed in the reigon. Gonzaga is the No. 3 and UConn the No. 4.
The Jayhawks (27-7), who won the Big 12 regular-season title by a game over Texas, have 17 Quad 1 victories, more than any team in the country.
KU is 17-7 in Quad 1 games. Texas is 14-8, Alabama 12-5, Baylor 11-10, Iowa State 10-11, Arizona 9-2, Purdue 9-4, Kansas State 9-8, UCLA 8-5, Xavier 8-6, TCU 8-11, Houston 7-1, Marquette 7-5, Texas A&M 7-5, Northwestern 7-6, Penn State 7-6, Tennessee 7-7.
KU fell to Texas 76-56 on Saturday in the finals of the Big 12 Tournament. Texas also beat the Jayhawks 75-59 on March 4 in Austin, Texas. Thus two of KU’s last four games were blowout defeats to the Longhorns.
KU defeated Texas, 88-80, on Feb. 6 in Lawrence.
KU has been a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament 16 times throughout history and 10 times under 20th-year coach Bill Self. There was no NCAA Tournament because of COVID in 2020.
