In the 2022 Kansas midterms, Republican Kris Kobach is facing off against Democrat Chris Mann over who will be the next Kansas attorney general.

Kobach, a former state secretary of state, has promised to use the office to aggressively challenge Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration in court if he wins. Mann, a former Wyandotte County prosecutor and Lawrence police officer, has said he will run the office in a non-political manner and focus on traditional public safety issues.

A Kobach victory would mark a political comeback for the 56-year-old Lecompton resident. Kobach has been out of office since January 2019, after losing the 2018 race for governor to Democrat Laura Kelly. He also lost the 2020 Republican U.S. Senate primary to then-Rep. Roger Marshall.

Mann, 46, has attacked Kobach’s professional competency, highlighting a federal judge’s 2018 order that Kobach complete remedial legal education and his past work as general counsel and as a board member for We Build the Wall, a charity that fundraised to build a private border wall. We Build the Wall is now accused of fraud in New York State.

Whoever wins will assume office in January, replacing current Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who didn’t seek reelection after three terms to run for governor.
