This midterm election, Republican Amanda Adkins is once again trying to unseat Democratic Rep. Sharice Davids in a rematch for Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District.
While Davids beat Adkins by 10 percentage points in 2020, Adkins, 47, has picked up a number of advantages in the past two years.
For one, the district has new boundaries. The Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature lopped off half of Wyandotte County, removing Democratic voters from the district while adding more conservative voters in Miami, Anderson and Franklin counties.
For another, Republicans are expecting a wave election where they win control of the U.S. House on the back of voter anger over high gas prices and inflation during President Joe Biden’s term. Adkins, a former Cerner executive, served as Kansas Republican chair when the party captured the seat in 2010 when the Democrats held the White House.
Davids, meanwhile, is attempting to hold off the Republican wave and win a third term in the swing district. Buoyed by the resounding rejection of a ballot measure that would have removed a right to an abortion from the Kansas constitution, Davids, 42, has centered access to abortion rights in her campaign, while attempting to highlight her efforts at bipartisanship in her first two terms in Congress.
Democrats have outspent Republicans in the district by more than $3 million.
