The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating after Kansas City, Kansas police officers investigating a break-in fatally shot a man in the hallway of an apartment building, the agency said in a news release.

The KBI identified the man killed in the police shooting as Brian Hilt of Kansas City, according to the news release.

According to the preliminary investigation, the man, later identified as Hilt, allegedly broke into the Glanville Towers in the 700 block of Nebraska Avenue, the KBI said. Surveillance video showed Hilt was allegedly armed with a gun.

At about 5:10 a.m., Kansas City, Kansas, firefighters responded to the Glanville Towers in the 700 block of Nebraska Avenue when a fire alarm was activated. Firefighters requested police after noticing damage from the break-in.

Shortly thereafter, a resident called 911 to report an armed disturbance. Two responding officers found Hilt in a hallway, the KBI said.

“Shots were fired after he (Hilt) disregarded commands to drop the gun he was holding,” the KBI said.

Hilt was struck by police gunfire and died from his injuries.

KCK’s first homicide of the year

The release didn’t say if one or both of the officers fired their guns, how many shots were fired or how many times Hilt was struck.

The killing is Kansas City, Kansas’ first homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star that includes fatal police shootings. By this time last year, there were four homicides.

The KBI said the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department requested around 6 a.m. Sunday for agents to respond and investigate the police shooting.

Once the investigation concludes, the KBI will present its findings to the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether any charges are warranted.
