A man is dead, another person in custody after armed disturbance in Kansas City
Officers searching for a person involved in an armed disturbance found a man suffering from a fatal gunshot wound Monday morning in a Kansas City neighborhood, a police spokesman said.
Officers responded about 9:30 a.m. to a reported disturbance involving a person armed with a weapon in the 3200 block of East 29th Street in the Santa Fe neighborhood of Kansas City, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.
By the time officers arrived, the person had fled. While officers were investigating, police received several other calls in the area reporting the same individual, DiMartino said.
Additional officers responded to search the area. Officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound about 10 a.m. at East 27th Street and Askew Avenue in the Ingleside neighborhood, DiMartino said.
Emergency medical workers responded to the area and declared the man deceased. DiMartino said a preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was the same person involved in the earlier incidents.
Police took a person into custody custody pending further investigation, DiMartino said. Police were not looking for any additional suspects.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence and any possible surveillance video to determine what led up to shots being fired.
The killing is Kansas City’s 19th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star. That compares to seven homicides reported by this time last year.
Kansas City has gotten off to a deadly start this year. The number of homicides so far in 2025 is slightly ahead of the number of killings for the same period in 2023, which was Kansas City’s deadliest year with 185 homicides. In 2023, there were 17 homicides by this time.
