Scores of people gathered under the Interstate 35 bridge on the edge of Kansas City’s Westside neighborhood Sunday afternoon to participate in a rally supporting immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community.

The event was put on by the Chicano Center for the Arts, a nonprofit that focused on uplifting Chicano and Latin artists in Kansas City. Guest speakers advocated for immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ equality and celebrated resilience and unity of the two groups.

“We’re excited that everybody came out and everybody who volunteered and just got engaged, it’s amazing. It’s a true community,” said Diosselyn Tot, board member of the Chicano Center for the Arts.

Speaker Edgar Galicia said there is a lot going on currently in the two communities, and that those at the rally want to vocalize that they have a place that is recognized and respected.

In his speech, Galicia spoke about the various forms of power the communities have, such as purchasing and cultural power and how the system was not built in their favor.

“Everybody would want more people (to show up) but as long as the people that are here are strong and continue supporting, it’s fantastic,” he said.

Sunday’s rally was the first of several similar events to be held in the future, according to Tot. She said those interested in getting involved, should stay tuned for information on the group’s website events page.

“Today was about unity and uplifting the voices for our immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities, wanting to make sure and ensure that everybody knows information, connects with their representatives, community leaders, all these organizers,” Tot said.
