A series of three winter storms will bring the potential for significant snowfall and bitterly cold temperatures to Kansas City this week, the National Weather Service said.

Light snow will be possible Monday as the first round of snow falls in the metro, according to the weather service. This storm will be among the weakest of the three, which some may consider a bust.

“Snow accumulations are expected to range from a dusting up to an inch,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion. “Areas south of (U.S. 50) seem most likely to get the higher end of that range.”

Temperatures will climb to around 38 degrees Monday, and snow is expected to start falling in the evening and continue overnight into Tuesday morning.

“Even with light snow, travel could be slick in spots,” the weather service said.

The snow will be concentrated in narrow bands, with areas under those bands receiving up to an inch. The weather service said most areas will receive less or no snow at all.

“Unfortunately, this first round will only be a primer,” the weather service said.

More powerful storm to bring significant snow to KC

“Late Tuesday into Wednesday morning, a much more impressive system moves through the area, giving us a much better chance for significant snowfall,” the weather service said.

Snowfall totals are expected to range between 5 and 9 inches across the entire forecast area, the weather service said. Some areas could see over 10 inches of snow.

The areas expected to see the most snowfall are south of U.S. 36 and north of Interstate 70, the weather service said. People should expect moderate to heavy snowfall on and off most of Wednesday.

The weather service said the snow is expected to deteriorate road conditions, making driving hazardous for the morning and evening commute.

The weather service has issued a winter storm watch for the Kansas City area and portions of east-central and northeast Kansas and central, north-central, northeast, northwest and west-central Missouri.

“Travel could be very difficult,” the weather service said.

Temperatures to tumble across Kansas City area

The multiple rounds of snow will send temperatures tumbling 15 to 20 degrees below the seasonal average from Tuesday to Thursday. Kansas City’s temperatures are typically around 42 degrees this time of year.

Temperatures will struggle to climb into the upper 20s on Tuesday and the lower 20s on Wednesday and Thursday.

Overnight temperatures will plunge into the upper teens on Tuesday and around 6 and 7 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Morning lows for Thursday and Friday will be the coldest as they are expected to bottom out in the single digits,” the weather service said.

Third round of wintry precipitation is expected this weekend

The weather pattern remains active as another winter storm system moves through the region Friday night into the weekend, the weather service said.

This system will bring another chance for snow and other wintry precipitation, but confidence remains low because the storm is so far out in the forecast.
