A 17-year-old boy died following a shooting Saturday in Independence.

Officers responded around 3:30 p.m. to a home in the 1100 block of South Cottage Avenue where they found the teen outside with a gunshot wound, according to a tweet from Independence police.

The boy was provided medical aid at the scene and taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Several people who were at the scene are cooperating with the investigation, police said.

Detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and involved parties to learn what events led up to the shooting.

This was the third homicide in Independence this year, according to data tracked by The Star. There were seven killings at this time last year.
