Man found dead in stairwell of Kansas City apartment, police investigate as homicide
A man was found dead inside a Kansas City apartment building early Tuesday, police said.
Officers were called just before 6:30 a.m. to Alcazar Apartments in the 100 block of West 39th Street to investigate a dead body, Kansas City Police spokesman Sgt. Jake Becchina said in an email.
There, police found an unresponsive man in the stairwell, Becchina said. The man was declared dead at the scene.
As of Tuesday morning, the nature of his injuries and the cause of death were undetermined. The death is being investigated as a homicide “based on the suspicious nature” of what police initially observed, Becchina said.
No suspect information was immediately available. The investigation is ongoing.
The killing was the 119th homicide in Kansas City this year, according to data kept by The Star that includes fatal police shootings. There had been 86 homicides in Kansas City by this time last year.
An award up to $25,000 is available for information leading to an arrest in any homicide investigation, police said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
