Man fatally shot Sunday in Kansas City; police found victim unresponsive on sidewalk

A man was fatally shot early Sunday in Kansas City, police said.

Police were called just after 1:30 a.m. to the 3400 block of Indiana Avenue in response to a shooting, Kansas City Police Department spokeswoman Officer Doaa El-Ashkar said in an email. There, they found an unresponsive man lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds.

The man, 30-year-old Shawn Ricks, was pronounced dead at the scene, El-Ashkar said.

No suspect information was immediately available. The investigation is ongoing.

The killing was the 114th homicide in Kansas City this year, according to data kept by The Star that includes fatal police shootings. There had been 80 homicides in Kansas City by this time last year.

A second man was also declared dead overnight in the Northland. His killing, which stemmed from an argument, is also being investigated as a homicide, El-Ashkar said.

An award up to $25,000 is available for information leading to an arrest in any homicide investigation, police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
