35-year-old man charged with first-degree murder in shooting death of Mission teen
Prosecutors charged a 35-year-old man Wednesday in connection with a shooting that killed a Mission 18-year-old in early May.
Jesse M. Monreal of Kansas City, Kansas, was charged in Johnson County District Court with first-degree murder and attempted robbery, according to a news release posted to the district attorney’s Twitter page.
The charges stemmed from the May 5 shooting death of 18-year-old Kiven Maquial, a former student at Shawnee Mission East and Shawnee Mission Northwest high schools.
Maquial was found in the parking lot of the Highlawn Montessori School at 3531 Somerset Drive in Prairie Village around 6:15 a.m. and declared dead from gunshot wounds just after 6:30 a.m., the release said.
Prairie Village police have said the shooting likely occurred hours earlier, around 2:45 a.m. Houses in the neighborhood were also struck by gunfire.
Monreal was released from jail in January after serving 81 days for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He is currently being held on a $1 million bond. His first court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
He was arrested in Livingston County, Missouri, on Tuesday after a car chase involving a stolen truck, according to a news release from the Livingston County sheriff. Monreal and two others fled after the truck crashed on private property, the release said. The other two people were not found.
In addition to his Johnson County charges, Monreal was charged Wednesday in Livingston County Circuit Court with receiving stolen property and in Lafayette County Circuit Court with three counts of stealing, one of resisting arrest and one of trespassing.
