18-year-old killed Tuesday was former student at two Shawnee Mission high schools

The teen found shot to death in front of a Prairie Village Montessori school Tuesday morning was a former student at both Shawnee Mission East and Shawnee Mission Northwest high schools, district officials confirmed Tuesday.

The teen, who police identified Tuesday afternoon as 18-year-old Kiven Maquial of Mission, was working to get his diploma through the Shawnee Mission School District’s Project Finish program, district spokesman David Smith said in an email to The Star.

Smith said the teen was last enrolled at Northwest in December. Since Maquial’s death was reported, social workers from other schools have been assigned to “attend to the needs of student and staff at Northwest,” Smith added.

Maquial’s body was found in the parking lot of the Highlawn Montessori School at 3531 Somerset Drive after a jogger called police for a welfare check around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, said Capt. Ivan Washington, a spokesman for the Prairie Village Police Department.

Several houses in the area were struck by gunfire, police said.

Maquial’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

No suspect information was available Tuesday afternoon. Washington said the investigation is ongoing and police were tracking several leads.

On Tuesday morning, police searched the area and attempted to establish a timeline. The scene was cleared by Tuesday afternoon.
