Police shoot person while responding to disturbance at trailer park in Belton
Belton police shot a man Sunday morning while responding to a reported disturbance at a trailer park, according to the local sheriff’s office.
Belton police officers and Cass County sheriff’s deputies had been called about 8 a.m. to the disturbance at a home in the 7500 block of the Crown Trailer Park.
Two Belton officers assisting with the call arrived first. The disturbance was thought to be between a person in the home and a relative, said. Lt. Craig McMein of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
During the incident, at least one of the officers shot a man. He was taken to a Kansas City hospital with serious injuries. The sheriff’s office, which was investigating the shooting, later identified the subject as 54-year-old William D. Mallow.
Mallow has been charged in Cass County Circuit Court with two counts of first-degree assault or attempted assault in connection to the incident. Bond has been set at $250,000 cash.
It was at least the fourth time this month that police in the Kansas City region were involved in a shooting. The three previous shootings happened within three days of each other.
On May 3, Overland Park police officer Mike Mosher was killed in a shootout with a man he had pursued for a suspected hit-and-run. The man, 38-year-old Phillip Michael Carney, also died in the shooting.
The next day, May 4, a woman was injured when a suspect and a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy exchanged gunfire during a pursuit about four miles east of Independence.
The day after that, May 5, an Independence police officer engaged in a high-speed pursuit of a commercial burglary suspect, chasing the man into Kansas City before shooting and killing him. Police said they found a gun at the scene.
