Woman injured after suspect allegedly exchanged gunfire with Jackson County deputy

A woman was injured late Monday after gunfire was allegedly exchanged with a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy during a pursuit, officials said.

A deputy attempted to pull over a man and woman in a vehicle for a traffic violation around 11 p.m., said Sgt. Bill Lowe of the Missouri Highway Patrol, which is investigating the shooting. The suspect vehicle continued down the road as someone inside the vehicle began firing shots at the deputy.

The suspect vehicle came to a stop in some shrubs near North Perrin and Happy Hollow roads, about four miles east of Independence, Lowe said. One of the passengers emerged, continuing to shoot in the direction of the deputy, who fired back. The woman was shot in the exchange. The deputy was not injured.

The woman was treated for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, Lowe said. She was walking and talking before she was taken to a hospital, Jackson County Sheriff Darryl Forte’ tweeted.

Both the man and woman are in custody, Lowe said around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The shooting was the second involving a law enforcement officer in as many days in the Kansas City metropolitan area. On Sunday, Overland Park police Officer Mike Mosher was fatally shot when he exchanged gunfire during an altercation with a hit-and-run suspect, who also was killed.

The Missouri Highway Patrol was investigating an officer-involved-shooting late Monday involving a Jackson County Sheriff deputy during a traffic stop east of Independence. A woman was injured when she allegedly exchanged fire with the deputy.
