Independence officer fatally shoots burglary suspect during chase into Kansas City
An Independence police officer shot and killed a burglary suspect during a chase into Kansas City late Tuesday, according to Kansas City police.
The shooting occurred near Ninth Street and Monroe Avenue, Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.
Dispatchers advised Kansas City police shortly before 10 p.m. that Independence officers were chasing a male burglary suspect and they were headed west into Kansas City, El-Ashkar said.
The pursuit ended near Ninth and Monroe, where the man ran from his vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the Independence officer shot the man, mortally wounding him, El-Ashkar said.
Officers attempted to provided first aid, but the man died at the scene, she said.
Kansas City police are investigating the shooting. A firearm was found at the scene, El-Ashkar said.
Detectives and crime scene investigators gathered evidence at the scene and looked for witnesses.
