Death of woman reported to have struck head in Kansas City apartment ruled a homicide

Update (4 p.m. Monday): Police said Monday that the death is no longer being considered a homicide, pending further investigation.

The death of woman reported to have struck her head against a wall inside her apartment has been ruled a homicide, Kansas City police said Sunday.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office determined that the victim’s injuries were caused by blunt force trauma to the head and classified her death as a homicide, Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a Kansas City Police Department spokeswoman, said in an email.

Officers responded to an ambulance call about 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Apartments at 115 Northwest Harlem Road, near the Wheeler Downtown Airport.

Officers contacted the victim, who reportedly had struck her head on the wall inside her apartment. She was taken to a hospital where she later died.

The medical examiner’s office determined on Saturday that the victim’s injuries were caused by blunt force trauma to the head and classified her death as a homicide.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the scene and collected evidence.

The woman’s death marked Kansas City’s 46th homicide of the year, according to statistics kept by The Star. By this time last year, the city had recorded 41 homicides.

Across the entire Kansas City metro area, there have been 65 homicides so far this year.

Anyone with information about the woman’s death is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Information leading to an arrest could result in up to a $25,000 cash reward.
