Early Easter morning shooting leaves one dead in Kansas City

Police were investigating a homicide after a man was found slain in Kansas City’s Midtown area, miles away from where he is believed to have been shot early Easter Sunday.

Police responded about 3 a.m. Sunday to a shooting at 39th and Main streets, Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.

Arriving officers found the victim inside a vehicle, but they were told the shooting occurred a little more than two miles to the east at 40th Street and Agnes Avenue, El-Ashkar said.

Police identified the victim as Daniel Washington, 33.

Detectives and crime scene investigators collected evidence at both scenes early Sunday, trying to determine what led up to the shooting, she said.

The shooting marked Kansas City’s 47th homicide of the year, according to statistics kept by The Star. By this time last year, the city had recorded 41 homicides.

Across the entire Kansas City metro area, there have been 65 homicides so far this year.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to contact the Kansas City Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Information leading to an arrest may result in a cash reward of up to $25,000.
