KC police: Woman’s death no longer considered homicide, pending further investigation

The death of a woman reported to have struck her head against a wall inside her apartment is no longer being considered a homicide, Kansas City police said Monday.

Officers responded to an ambulance call about 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Apartments at 115 Northwest Harlem Road, near the Wheeler Downtown Airport.

At the time, the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office ruled that the victim’s injuries were caused by blunt force trauma to the head and classified her death as a homicide.

However, on Monday detectives investigating the death have determined that there was not yet enough evidence to fully support that a homicide had taken place despite the medical examiner’s current ruling, said police spokeswoman Officer Doaa S. El-Ashkar.

“It is not currently being counted as a homicide, if and when the details of the investigation support a re-classification we will let everyone know,” El-Ashkar said in an email.

On Wednesday, officers contacted the victim, who reportedly had struck her head on the wall inside her apartment. She was taken to a hospital where she later died.

The medical examiner’s office determined on Saturday that the victim’s injuries were caused by blunt force trauma to the head and classified her death as a homicide.

Police have not released the victim’s name.
