Police identify 21-year-old man killed in Kansas City shooting that injured infant
Police say that 21-year-old DeAndre Chiney was the man killed in a double shooting outside a Kansas City apartment that also injured an infant, according to a release Thursday.
The infant, who has yet to turn 1, had non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to be released from a hospital in the coming days, Kansas City police said in a release.
Police responded to the shooting shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday outside an apartment in the 2000 block of Wheeling Avenue. Arriving officers found the injured Chiney, who was rushed to a hospital where he later died.
While investigating the shooting, police learned that the infant had also been shot, but had been taken to a hospital before police arrived. People at the hospital told police that the child was shot at the same location.
Witnesses told police that the shooting stemmed from an argument between Chiney and another person.
Police said the investigation continued Thursday, and they have identified a person of interest. No suspect information was released.
The killing marked the third homicide this year in Kansas City, according to data kept by The Star. By this time last year, there had been four homicides.
The homicide was the first of two homicides that occurred in the city Wednesday.
The second one occurred just after 7:30 a.m. inside a home in the 6800 block of Monroe Avenue. The victim’s identity has not been released, but he was described by police as a man in his late teens.
Police were investigating the possibility that the two homicides were linked.
