Man killed, young child wounded in shooting Wednesday outside Kansas City apartment
A man was killed and a child was wounded in a shooting Wednesday in Kansas City, according to police.
The shooting was reported about 12:53 p.m. outside an apartment in the 2000 block of Wheeling Avenue, where responding officers found a man who had been shot, according to the Kansas City Police Department.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he died, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman. He has not been identified publicly.
While police were investigating, a child under the age of 5 was taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, said Capt. Dave Jackson, a police spokesman. People at the hospital told police the child was shot at the same location.
Witnesses told police the shooting stemmed from an argument that happened in front of the residence between the man and the suspect. Police had not identified a suspect, but did not think there was a threat to the public, Jackson said.
When 21-year-old Rekiyah Horton, who lives across the street, heard five or six gunshots, she grabbed her 10-month-old son and stayed away from the windows of her apartment. When she looked outside, she saw about 10 people running in a panic to help the man who ultimately died.
Horton, who is pregnant, has lived in the area since October but she said she may now considering moving.
“This kind of scared me a little bit,” she said.
As detectives canvassed the scene, pointing to evidence, school buses dropped children off nearby. Investigators found multiple shell casings. One woman said the crime scene prevented her from driving her daughter to daycare.
The killing marked the third homicide this year in Kansas City, according to data kept by The Star. By this time last year, there had been four homicides.
Police asked anyone with information to call the homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
