Police in Kansas City, Kansas, investigate homicide after shooting early Sunday

One person was killed in a shooting early Sunday in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department responded to the shooting at 2:34 a.m. in the 3000 block of North 34th Street.

Officers found Luis Deras-Orellana, 21, with several gunshot wounds, according to Officer Jonathon Westbrook, a spokesman for the department. He was transported to a hospital where he died.

Residents on the block said they heard multiple gunshots.

One man, who said the area is usually quiet, said he heard several shots, then a pause, then about six more gunshots. Shortly thereafter, he heard sirens and saw police pulling up to a home on the block.

The incident marks the first homicide recorded this year in Kansas City, Kansas. In 2019, 37 people in Kansas City, Kansas, were killed in homicides.
