Man charged with shooting and killing his mother in Kansas City, court records say
A Kansas City man who was arrested last weekend after a homicide is accused of shooting and killing his 51-year-old mother near their Northland home, according to charging documents filed in Clay County Circuit Court.
The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office charged Joshua C. Thompson, 20, with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection to the Dec. 27 shooting death of Lisa D. Powell. Thompson remains in the county jail with bond set at $1 million.
According to a probable cause statement obtained Friday, Kansas City police were called to the 7200 block of North Jefferson Court just before 11 p.m. Dec. 27 after neighbors heard gunfire in the area.
Officers found Powell lying on a pathway between two townhomes. The victim had gunshot wounds to the head and arm. Officers also located three 10 mm shell casings, three live 10 mm cartridges and one spent bullet near her body.
Witnesses who spoke to police recalled hearing a female yelling for help followed by the sound of shots. They described seeing a man walking away from the scene and toward one of the townhomes after the shooting.
Officers at the scene saw a man matching the witnesses’ descriptions exit a residence on North Jefferson Court. The man, later identified as Thompson, was detained for questioning. Police later learned from the family that the victim was Thompson’s mother.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence and found in Thompson’s room a manufacturer’s box for a Glock 10 mm handgun and a box of ammunition with the same head stamp as the casings and cartridges found near the victim, court records stated. The gun and a magazine loaded with the 10 mm ammunition were found in a wooded area west of the home.
Thompson declined to answer questions from police and requested an attorney. Public records do not yet list an attorney who could be reached for comment.
A bond hearing in the case is scheduled for 9 a.m. Jan. 7.
