Construction activity has buzzed around the Missouri 291-U.S. 50 interchange in Lee’s Summit recently as a pair of sprawling commercial and residential developments anchored by a new Costco store begin to take shape.
The big box retailer recently announced plans to open the new Costco store in what’s been labeled the East Village development in August.
Construction has hummed along at the store site, and the warehouse has started to take shape in recent weeks. A swath of jobs have been posted for the Lee’s Summit store, and hiring is open.
Plenty more is on the way in the area.
Local officials held a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony for East Village, on the east side of 291, and Oldham Village, on the west side, in May.
“We are proud to officially break ground on Oldham Village and East Village alongside an incredible group of partners, city leaders, contractors, and community members helping bring this vision to life,” Drake Development, the Overland Park developer behind the projects, said in a recent social media post. “Big things ahead for this corridor and the future growth of Lee’s Summit. Stay tuned!”
Drake CEO Matt Pennington did not respond to a message from The Star Tuesday.
Barbecue, groceries and more
Here’s a look at some of what’s coming to the area:
East Village. The development is expected to be built out with a swath of commercial and residential buildings south of Costco, according to a presentation City Council members saw in December.
Recreation. Lee’s Summit is working through plans for a large indoor recreation complex in Oldham Village. On Wednesday, Lee’s Summit’s Parks and Recreation board will consider awarding a $24.1 million bid for construction of the facility, which is expected to be around 100,000 square feet and have 10 sports courts, meeting areas and administrative space.
Beer and pickleball. An application filed with the city shows plans for a new Five Four Drafthouse location with pickleball courts and a bag toss area. In a social media post last week, Drake Development confirmed plans for the location and said it would offer a “fresh take on dining with scratch-made food, golf bays, pickleball courts, yard games, and a spacious outdoor patio designed for gathering.”
The Star reported earlier this year that the location is expected to open in early 2027.
Chick-fil-A. A new Oldham Village location has been open for a few months.
Car wash. Work is underway on a Club Car Wash location adjacent to the Chick-fil-A.
Burgers. Smalls Sliders, a burger chain, opened near the Chick-fil-A location in June.
Barbecue. Q39, the beloved barbecue chain, is expected to open in Oldham Village over the summer. Hiring is open for the restaurant, and jobs are posted for the site.
