Kansas City restaurant with pickleball, yard games to be built in the Northland
A restaurant with two pickleball courts, a 10,000 square-foot courtyard and lawn games will soon be built in the Northland.
Five Four Restaurant & Drafthouse — an updated concept from 54th Street Grill and Bar — is moving its Liberty location (9251 NE Barry Road) to a former Cheddar’s site.
Kelly Norsworthy Reid, a spokeswoman with the brand, said the relocated spot with new amenities will be built at 8380 N. Booth Ave. Construction is set to begin in May 2026, with an estimated completion date of July or August 2027.
The group will completely tear down the old Cheddar’s, which closed in August 2023. It had been open for more than a decade.
Reid said the new Five Four will be a “hybrid” of the Independence location’s look and Zona Rosa location’s bar area.
The Liberty location will close soon after the Booth Avenue spot is completed.
“... By moving locations, we are able to keep guests and employees happy, as we will keep both Liberty and Lee’s Summit open during the new build,” Reid said in an email to The Star. “We will only close 2-3 days before opening the new locations.”
The upcoming Lee’s Summit spot at Highway 50 and Route 291, expected to land in early 2027, will also have pickleball courts. It, too, is a relocation; the 815 SE Third St. spot will close after completion.
Five Four is also planning a Lenexa location — 87th and Scarborough streets in the City Center area — which hopes to drop in December 2026. In lieu of pickleball courts, that spot will have a green space with yard games.
Five Four’s scratch menu includes rattlesnake pasta, baby back ribs, sandwiches, salads, specialty cocktails and more.
The locally based brand has spots in the KC, San Antonio and Dallas-Fort Worth areas.
