A teenager has been identified as the young man killed in an afternoon shooting in Kansas City’s Northland on Wednesday, according to police.

Officers responded to the 7800 block of Northeast 75th Court around 2:15 p.m., according to KCPD spokesperson Capt. Jake Becchina. Initial information in the investigation indicated that an altercation between at least two people led to the shooting, Becchina said.

At the scene, officers discovered a young man, who they believed at the time could have been a teenager, unresponsive in the front yard with gunshot wounds. The shooting victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was later identified as Charles Sanders, 17.

Police have not announced any arrests in the case.

Wednesday’s shooting was the 45th homicide reported in Kansas City in 2025, according to data collected by The Star. At this time last year, 46 homicides had been reported in the city, according to Star data.
