Independence man charged in fatal Independence Ridge apartment shooting: Prosecutor
An Independence man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting at an apartment complex in Independence on Thursday afternoon.
Nicholas A. Camacho-Sanchez faces charges of unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action for his role in the shooting. Though at least one person was allegedly killed in the double shooting, Camacho-Sanchez has not been charged with murder.
Independence police officers responded to the shooting at the Independence Ridge Apartments, 19012 E 37th Terrace S, around 2:45 a.m. Thursday, according to Independence police spokesperson officer Bryan Conley. They discovered a dead man with a gunshot wound inside an apartment. Around the same time, another man presented to a local hospital with non-fatal gunshot wounds.
During their initial investigation, police reviewed video footage showing two figures firing shots at a van as it left the Independence Ridge parking lot around the time of the shooting. Witnesses allegedly identified one of the men as Camacho-Sanchez, according to court documents.
Camacho-Sanchez is being held on a $250,000 cash bond.
Additional charges may follow, as the investigation into the shooting remains open, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Neither victim in Thursday’s shooting has been publicly identified. The fatal shooting was the 11th homicide reported in Independence in 2024, according to data collected by The Star.
In 2023, a total of 11 shootings were reported in Independence.
