One man is dead and another man was being treated for a gunshot wound after an early morning double shooting at the Independence Ridge Apartments in Independence, a police spokesman said Thursday.

Officers responded at about 2:45 a.m. Thursday to a reported shooting at the apartment complex in the 19100 block of East 37th Terrace South, said Officer Bryan Conley with the Independence Police Department.

Arriving officers found a deceased man inside one of the apartments, Conley said. During their investigation, staff at a local hospital notified officers that a gunshot victim had been brought there.

Police determined the wounded man had been involved in the shooting at the complex. Conley said the man was in stable condition.

The Independence Police Department’s criminal investigation unit was investigating the homicide, including the circumstances surrounding the shooting and suspect information, Conley said.

The killing is the 11th homicide in Independence this year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. In 2023, the city had a total of 11 homicides.

Anyone with information about the fatal shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477) or the Independence Police Department at 816-325-7300.
