One person died in a shooting near a Little Caesar’s pizza franchise in south Kansas City on Thursday evening. It marked the second shooting death near the restaurant in under six weeks.

Officers responded to the 8700 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard around 5:00 p.m. Thursday, according to officer Alayna Gonzalez, a Kansas City Police Department spokesperson. Several witnesses pointed officers toward a nearby vehicle with a man inside and reported that he had been shot, Gonzalez said.

The man was unresponsive and had suffered gunshot wounds when officers reached him, according to Gonzalez. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency medical responders.

Police have not identified a suspect as of Thursday night, according to Gonzalez.

The plaza at 8700 Blue Ridge Boulevard is occupied by the Little Caesar’s and by an auto title and payday loan office. Another shooting took place inside the Little Caesar’s on Oct. 25 around 8:00 p.m.

Reginald Lamar, 48, was killed in the October shooting, which police believe was the result of an argument between him and another person he knew.

Thursday’s shooting was the 140th homicide reported in Kansas City in 2024, according to data collected by The Star. At this time last year, 174 homicides had been reported in the city.
