After two years, the Kansas City Symphony announced the return of the Bank of America Celebration at the Station, which will take place the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

The free concert will include fireworks and patriotic music. The event will feature a “unity” theme for 2022, highlighting an ability for people to come together during times of struggle and also to honor those who have served.

The event was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The May 29 concert takes place on the grounds of Union Station Kansas City and the National World War I Museum and Memorial. The site opens at 5 p.m. with live pre-concert entertainment on the main stage.

The main concert presented by the Kansas City Symphony and conducted by Music Director Michael Stern will start at 8 p.m. and will be followed by a large fireworks display.

This year’s performance will also feature Kansas City native Oleta Adams.

“We are overjoyed to bring Kansas City’s favorite event back for 2022,” said Danny Beckley, the symphony’s executive director. “After what we have all endured over these years, it will be incredibly meaningful to gather together to celebrate our country and honor those who have give their all for it.”

The concert usually attracts around 50,000 people.

The symphony’s announcement comes as COVID-19 cases have been sharply fallen since January.

Last week, Gov. Mike Parson declared the “COVID-19 crisis is over here in the state of Missouri” and said the state will begin treating the virus as an endemic.
