Taylor Swift fan irked TV cameras showed Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes at softball game
Should we change it to dads, Brads, Chads and ... and Nicoles?
Superstar singer Taylor Swift famously labeled the critics of her being at Chiefs games as dads, Brads and Chads. That was in response to football fans who were upset that less than 1% of a broadcast was spent showing the world’s biggest pop star cheering for her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
Swift’s fans found the criticism to be unwarranted. But one changed her tune last week.
When Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes attended the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, ESPN did an in-game interview with him and his wife, Kansas City Current co-owner Brittany Mahomes.
ESPN cameras also panned to Mahomes multiple times as he cheered his alma mater, Texas Tech.
A Swiftie named Nicole shared a video on TikTok expressing her displeasure at Mahomes being shown frequently during the game.
“I now understand why NFL fans get annoyed when they show Taylor Swift on the broadcast like all the time when she’s at the Chiefs games,” Nicole said. “Patrick Mahomes was in Oklahoma City tonight supporting the Texas Tech softball team in Game 2 of the national championship, and they showed him on the broadcast so many times. Now, look, I’m happy he and his wife are there and helps bring great awareness to softball. I love that they have their NWSL thing in Kansas City, but I don’t need to see him cheering for Texas Tech on my TV like after every play.
“Now I get it. He is like, the biggest athlete to come out of Texas Tech. I understand. that, but I’m just trying to watch some softball. Like I don’t really care about Patrick Mahomes cheering after they win. However, I now understand that a lot of people don’t care when Taylor Swift is cheering at the Chiefs games. But I love Taylor Swift so I love to see her. I get it now, though. I get it.”
That video generated a lot of responses. Here is some of what people wrote.
“Before Taylor Swift, NO ONE complained about celebs being shown on sports broadcasts,” one person wrote. “People bothered by this are so weird to me.”
“100% agree with you,” said a person in response to the original post. “other people invest also...they didn’t show them!!”
Another shared: “He is also a huge investor $ in women’s athletics”
“We don’t hate Taylor Swift,” wrote one in response. “We hate that she’s shown after every single play. It’s annoying when it’s every game.”
“Completely disagree,” a fan opined. “I think this gives visibility to the sport. Same thing about Taylor bringing young girls to football with their dads.”
“I’m a Mahomes fan and I was getting annoyed,” wrote another. “They (missed) several pitches being thrown because they were showing him.”
“Why would anyone get annoyed by this or Swift?” another shared. “People just need to relax.”
One person wrote: “Taylor isn’t an athlete. She’s irrelevant in sports.”
Another comment: “lol listen I don’t like the man but I do appreciate his dedication to growing women’s sports so I’ll let it slide.”
“I agree,” wrote one woman. “I was excited to see him and I’m happy for all he does for the team and bringing exposure to the sport but it got a little excessive. I wanted to see more of the players. And I bet a lot of people disagreeing with you complain about Taylor Swift getting some screen time in football games.”
