One of the best scenes in “Ted Lasso” came in Season 1 when Ted schooled Rupert in a game of darts.
Ted psyched himself up for the winning shot by saying “barbecue sauce.”
Kansas City barbecue is and continues to be featured prominently in “Ted Lasso,” and it happened again this week in episode six of the third season. The title is “Dutch Treat,” and it takes place in Amsterdam, where “Ted Lasso” co-creators Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly all once lived and worked.
Ted visits the American-themed Yankee Doodle Burger Barn where he orders onion rings and other deep-fried foods. When asked what sauce he’d like with his meal, Ted has the server pick.
She returns with Arthur Bryant’s barbecue sauce, much to Ted’s surprise.
While Kansas Citians instantly recognized the bottle, other fans of the show went looking for more about the sauce. A publicist for Arthur Bryant’s said Google searches for the restaurant were up a crazy 1000% after the episode was available for streaming.
After tasting the sauce, Ted had an epiphany that involved a sports figure many Kansas City fans know: Tex Winter. That was the second Kansas City Easter egg of the episode.
Winter, who died in 2018, is the father of the Triangle Offense, which he used while coaching Kansas State from 1953-’68. The Chicago Bulls ran the Triangle Offense in the 1980s and ’90s, when Winter was an assistant and Michael Jordan was playing.
A brief clip of Winter at Kansas State was shown in the “Ted Lasso” episode.
