Here are more ‘Ted Lasso’ Easter eggs, including one about Jason Sudeikis’ mother
“Ted Lasso” returns Wednesday for the third and (probably) final season on Apple+.
In addition to winning a boatload of awards in the first two seasons, creator and star Jason Sudeikis and the writers have packed the show with fun Easter eggs.
Heck, season one was almost a love letter to Kansas City because there were so many references to Sudeikis’ hometown. We put them all in one handy guide.
Season two dialed back on the KC Easter eggs, but there were plenty of things fans may have missed. Here is a look at some of those fun touches from the show’s creators.
Hi mom
In episode 12 of season two, Roy hands Keeley with plane tickets to Marbella.
Keeley asks Roy: “How did you get actual printed tickets?”
Roy’s response: “From my travel agent, Kathy. She’s old school.”
Sudeikis’ mom, Kathy, is a travel agent, and that was not a coincidence.
Tom Hanks reference
There are a ton of rom-com references throughout Season 2, but this one may have gone unnoticed by some.
Richmond star Sam Obisanya and team owner Rebecca first started chatting on the Bantr app, and there’s a clear nod to the movie, “You’ve Got Mail.”
In the film, Tom Hanks (NY152) and Meg Ryan (Shopgirl) communicate via Instant Messages. On Bantr, Sam’s handle is LDN152 and Rebecca’s is Bossgirl on “Ted Lasso.”
What’s in a name?
In an interview with “60 Minutes,” Sudeikis revealed that the player names in the Richmond locker room have special meaning to the creative geniuses behind the show.
There’s a nod to the late Martin de Maat, who was the Artistic Director at The Second City Training Center in Chicago.
Former Bulls star Toni Kukoč, who wore No. 7, is one of the names viewers can see.
Creators Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly all spent time at Boom Chicago in Amsterdam. Boom Chicago’s CEO Saskia Maas’ last name is in the locker room, too.
Cockburn is another player name, and that is the family name of Sudeikis’ ex-wife, Olivia Wilde.
Right at home
In Season 2’s Christmas episode, Higgins mentions the cities and countries the fictional players call home.
The Los Angeles Times reported that those are the actual cities and countries from which those actors hail. Nice touch, eh?
