The Kansas City Current and National Women’s Soccer League released the KC club’s schedule for 2024 — the Current’s first season in its new purpose-built venue along the Berkley Park riverfront.
The Current’s season and home opener at CPKC Stadium is set for noon on March 16 against the Portland Thorns. The match — the league’s first official game of the season — will be nationally televised on ABC, with coverage starting at 11:30 a.m.
The Current will play host to one of the NWSL’s two new expansion clubs — Bay FC from the San Francisco area — at CPKC Stadium on April 20. The Current visit the other — the Utah Royals — on May 25.
With 14 teams in the NWSL this season, each team will face the others twice, once at home and once away. The top eight teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will qualify for the playoffs.
The NWSL’s regular season runs from March 16 to Nov. 3, with the league taking a break in play for the 2024 Olympics. The Current will begin their break after a July 6 home match, returning to competition Aug. 25 in Washington, D.C.
The NWSL has announced that a tournament will be played during the Olympic break, but further details have not yet been released.
The Current’s 2024 lineup includes a couple of overlapping match dates/times with Sporting KC of Major League Soccer. Sporting KC shared Children’s Mercy Park with the Current for the last two seasons.
Such match overlap will occur twice this year, including for the Current’s March 16 opener at CPKC Stadium. Sporting KC plays the San Jose Earthquakes at 7:30 p.m. that day at Children’s Mercy Park.
On April 20, the Current will play host Bay FC while Sporting plays host to St. Louis City SC. The Current kick off at 6:30 p.m., Sporting at 7:30 p.m.
Thanks to a league-wide media-rights arrangement struck late last year, many of the Current’s matches will be televised across several services/channels, including ION, Prime Video and the ESPN and CBS family of networks.
The rest will be shown on NWSL+, the league’s new direct-to-consumer streaming platform. Games on NWSL+ will be free to stream and available for download on all Apple and Android devices, as well as Apple TV, Fire TV and Roku.
