KC Current’s preseason roster features intriguing names, including re-signed Canadian

The Kansas City Current have added a well-known veteran presence to their 2024 roster as they prepare to depart for the first leg of their preseason preparations.

Midfielder Desiree Scott was re-signed Wednesday to a one-year contract after missing all of the 2023 season while recovering from offseason surgery.

“Desi is a true leader on and off the field, and we are very happy to have her back for another year,” Current general manager Camille Ashton said in a team news release. “Last year was tough on her, but she’s worked hard and we are excited to see her come back.”

Scott was an original member of the old FCKC club’s inaugural 2013 season in the National Women’s Soccer League. With FCKC, she played for new KC Current head coach and sporting director, Vlatko Andonovski.

Scott has made 124 career NWSL appearances with more than 10,000 total minutes played. Representing Canada internationally, she’s also a veteran of three World Cups who has won two Olympic bronze medals (2012 and 2016), as well as a coveted gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I am so excited to be able to be back in the place I call my home away from home,” Scott said in the club news release announcing her return. “They say all good things take time, and I just needed a little extra, but to say I’m motivated is an understatement.”

Scott will start the year on the league’s season-ending injury list because of her missed 2023 season. Other Current players who will start out on that list include Hanna Glas and Mallory Weber.

Glas, acquired during the 2023 preseason, never debuted for the Current while recovering from a torn ACL. Weber, meanwhile, was hurt just 10 minutes after entering the field for the first time since tearing an ACL in 2022. Weber is listed as a non-roster invitee on this year’s preseason roster.

The Current have three other non-roster invitees on their 2024 preseason roster, and Sophie Braun’s name stands out. She’s an American who was born in Oregon and attended Gonzaga but represented Argentina at the 2023 World Cup (her mother is Argentinian).

Braun scored one of the tournament’s best goals. She is listed as a midfielder for the Current and can also play along the back line. She previously played for Club León in Mexico.

Braun is joined by goalkeeper Brittany Isenhour, who spent the 2023 NWSL season with Angel City FC, and Regan Steigleder, an Iowa City, Iowa, native who played four years at Northwestern. She spent the last two years with KIF Örebro in Sweden.

On Tuesday, the Current announced the sign-and-trade of goalkeeper Cassie Miller to NJ/NY Gotham FC in exchange for $70,000 in allocation money and $30,000 in “inter-league transfer funds.”

Absent from the Current’s preseason roster is 2024 third-round NWSL Draft pick Halle Mackiewcz. A club source informed The Star that Mackiewicz is currently working through an injury and is planning to report at a later date.

The NWSL is expected to announce the league’s schedule Thursday afternoon.
