The Kansas City Current are one step away from immortality after upsetting the OL Reign 2-0 in Seattle on Sunday. They now have a date with the Portland Thorns in Washington D.C. for the NWSL championship on Saturday, and some dedicated Kansas City fans are making the trek to witness the moment.
It’s been a run for the ages for the Current, and they’re only in their second season as a franchise. The team finished dead last in 2021, and made a lot of roster changes to get where they are today.
“We get to continue a journey that we’ve been on all season,” Current coach Matt Potter said in a postgame interview on Sunday. “... And the fact that we get to play one more game and be together another week, it’s pretty darn exciting.”
The journey also continues for the KC Blue Crew, the Current’s official supporters group. They’ve packed Children’s Mercy Park and other arenas all season, and will follow the team for one last dance of 2022.
The crew has been scrambling since Sunday night. A few group members had tickets and flights booked because they were planning on going to the final game regardless of who was playing for the championship. But most of the group started planning their trips right as the final whistle blew.
Members were figuring out which flights to take or if it was easier for them to drive from Kansas City to Washington D.C, what hotels to stay at and, most importantly, where the fans would stand and cheer on Saturday. According to the Blue Crew’s media director Danielle Russell, the first 18 hours after the game ended was nonstop planning.
Russell’s making the journey from Iowa to D.C. for the game and said that flights aren’t cheap. Out of KCI, flights either aren’t cheap or aren’t convenient. The cheapest round-trip flight on Tuesday afternoon is a $168 Frontier Airlines fight that departs from KCI at 10:59 p.m. on Friday and has a seven-hour layover in Denver.
A nonstop flight from Kansas City to the nation’s capital costs $360 and leaves at 6:08 a.m. on Friday.
“I think that as hectic as stuff is now, it’s going to be so cool Saturday night seeing all the teal in the stadium and seeing all the people cheering,” Russell said. “Whether people are at the game or at a watch party, it’s going to be special.”
HOW TO GET TICKETS TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP
The Blue Crew announced on Twitter that they will be in section 117 for the championship game. This is the designated supporter section for the group and Current fans who want to join.
It’s the general admission section, and is similar to “The Cauldron” at Children’s Mercy Park.
You can get tickets for the Current fan section here. Tickets cost $34 in this section of the stadium, but you can get tickets elsewhere from anywhere between $37-179 for verified seats and up to $406 for verified resale prices.
Russell knows of at least 100 members of the group who will be in the supporter’s section, but she’s also anticipating more to show up for the big game.
“A championship game is going to be an experience no matter what and I think it’s going to have a lot of fanfare and fun activities,” Russell said. “Overall, I think it’s about the teams and the soccer and I think it’s going to be a really fun game and I think people are going to really enjoy themselves out there.”
