KC Replay: Down go ‘Horns, Chiefs hammer Raiders, Roos upset Mizzou, soccer team hiring

Let’s be honest. It’s not often that Kansas Jayhawks football earns top billing.

But, oh boy, is it deserved here after their 57-56 win in overtime over the Texas Longhorns in Austin.

The Horns came into the game as 31-point favorites last Saturday, but Kansas was tough every step of the way, first building a big lead, then going with a gutsy and successful play-call in overtime rather than kicking an extra point to simply pull even again.

The last time KU won a Big 12 road game, George W. Bush was our president.

Down go the Horns

We’ll say it again, because it’s still just ... bonkers: KU upset Texas 57-56 as a 31-point road ‘dog.

Jared Casey was the hero in Austin, catching the winning two-point conversion pass from quarterback Jalon Daniels. A couple days later, Casey was filming TV spots.

But the Jayhawks weren’t the only regional Division I program claiming victory last weekend. Mizzou beat South Carolina 31-28 in CoMo before playing host to the Florida Gators on Saturday.

And K-State beat West Virginia 34-17 last weekend and welcomed 11th-ranked Baylor to Bill Snyder Family Stadium this weekend.

Chiefs seem to be ... back

The Chiefs were clicking in a big way last Sunday night in Las Vegas, beating the Raiders 41-14.

Patrick Mahomes eclipsed 400 yards through the air and threw for five touchdowns. He did not throw an interception, which this season is newsworthy in itself.

The leading receiver in this one was backup running back Darrel Williams. Pressed into duty because Clyde Edwards-Helaire remained sidelined with a knee injury, the fourth-year pro out of LSU caught all nine balls thrown his way and led the Chiefs with 101 yards and a TD. He also rushed for 43 yards on 11 carries

Seventh for Salvy

Royals catcher Salvy Perez finished seventh in this year’s voting for the American League MVP. Angels pitcher/DH Shohei Ohtani was the unanimous winner. Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies won his second NL MVP.

Down on the farm, Royals prospects Nick Pratto and Michael Massey won Minor League Gold Gloves.

The Royals unveiled some new uniform looks on Friday, with twists and tweaks that include block “KANSAS CITY” lettering in some versions and a darker shade of blue on others.

Now hiring: KC Current

Somewhat surprisingly, Huw Williams is out as head coach of the Kansas City Current, reassigned to a role on the team’s technical staff.

The former head coach of the defunct FC Kansas City team helped get the “current” organization (sorry/not sorry for bad word play) ready for games just a couple of months after its inception. But the KC Current — so renamed after playing the season as “KC NWSL” — won just three games, lost 14 and settled for draws in seven.

They’re seeking far better results in 2022.

Big week for basketball

The Jayhawks beat Stony Brook 88-59 on Thursday night. K-State beat visiting Omaha 79-64.

But the biggest news around the KC hoops scene involved the Kansas City Roos’ Monday upset of host Mizzou, 80-66 (though the Tigers did bounce back with a 54-37 home win over Northern Illinois on Thursday).

One more bit of UMKC news: The Missouri Valley Conference could be bringing in the Roos as a new member of the league. Stay tuned for developments on that one.
