A wind chill warning is in place until 10 a.m. Sunday in Kansas City as temperatures hover in the single digits.

As of 8 a.m., the temperature was about 4 degrees.

Sunday continues a bitter cold stretch for the KC metro that began Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

“Outside hurts this AM, temps are in the single digits to -5, with wind chills between -5 to -20,” the weather service tweeted Sunday. “Look for a warming trend as we move into the first part of the work week.”

While sunny, Sunday’s high temperatures may only reach about 17 degrees, with an overnight low of 7.

The weather service advises that anyone going outside wear hats, gloves and other cold weather gear. Frostbite can set in on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

Monday and Tuesday will get above freezing, with highs in the upper 30s and low 40s, before the temperatures drop again. Thursday is predicted to be the coldest day this week, with a high of 13.

The bout of cold arrived after Kansas City experienced its warmest recorded Christmas Eve, with temperatures hitting 71 degrees. Overall, the average temperature this December in Kansas City was 10 degrees higher than normal, and the third-warmest December recorded in more than a century. It was one of only two Decembers where no snow fell.

But on Saturday morning, with the arrival of the new year — and a winter storm — Kansas City officially recorded the fifth-snowiest New Year’s Day, the weather service reported.
