It’s beginning to look a lot like April: Kansas City hits record warm Christmas Eve

Friday wasn’t a white Christmas Eve in Kansas City. It was a record-breaking warm one.

Kansas City broke the record for the warmest Christmas Eve ever as the temperature at Kansas City International Airport hit 67 degrees around noon, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature continued to climb to 71 degrees by mid-afternoon.

The previous record of 66 degrees had stood since 1955.

So far, Kansas City has seen temperatures about 15 to 20 degrees warmer than average for this time of year. This trend is expected to continue through the weekend, with highs expected in the 50s most days.

Last Sunday, temperatures dropped into the teens for the first time all month. The weather service noted it was one of the latest dates of the season for such a low temperature to finally be reached.

Kansas City saw some light snowfall in early November, but it didn’t accumulate.

Christmas Day in Kansas City has historically had about a 20% chance of snow.This year, with highs in the upper 50s, the odds pretty much look impossible.
