Experts say boy needs more special ed. District goes to court

A Kansas City area family is entangled in litigation with Shawnee Mission schools over special education law and services their son needs.


In federal court, the Shawnee Mission school district is appealing two independent officers’ rulings saying that the school system violated special education law.

Natalie and Christopher Beer, a Westwood couple, filed a due process complaint in 2020, alleging that the district failed to appropriately evaluate their son, who has autism, for special education and implement needed services. A hearing officer — a third party attorney who is trained to conduct special education hearings — largely sided with the Beers, agreeing that the district had violated the federal Individuals With Disabilities Education Act.

And last year, a review officer affirmed much of the ruling.
