Experts say boy needs more special ed. District goes to court

A Kansas City area family is entangled in litigation with Shawnee Mission schools over special education law and services their son needs.

Two independent hearing officers have ruled that the Shawnee Mission school district violated special education law, after a Westwood couple filed a complaint alleging that their son was denied needed services.

Natalie and Christopher Beer filed a due process complaint in 2020, claiming that the district had failed to properly evaluate their son, who has autism, for special education and implement supports. A hearing officer — a third party attorney who is trained to conduct special education hearings — largely sided with the Beers.

And last year, a review officer affirmed much of the ruling. Now, the district is appealing in federal court.
