Man killed, person in custody after fight turns deadly in Kansas City’s Northland

One man is dead and a person in custody Monday after shots were fired during a fight in a Kansas City’s Northland neighborhood, a police spokesman said.

Officers responding to the 7:30 a.m. shooting found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds and lying in the street in the 2500 block of Northeast 78th Street, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.

Emergency medical crews arrived at the same time and started performing life-saving measures. The victim died at the scene. Officers took a person into custody.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the scene and were collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses. A preliminary investigation revealed that a dispute between two people who knew each other escalated into a fight, DiMartino said. Shots were then fired, striking the victim.

Police did not say how the two knew each other or what the dispute was about.

The killing is Kansas City’s fifth homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star. That compares to seven homicides reported at this time last year.

Detectives urged anyone with information about the homicide to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Tips submitted anonymously to the hotline may be eligible for a reward of up to $25,000. Tipsters may also call homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043.
