Gunfire, wrong-way drivers, crash shut down I-35 in Johnson County Sunday night

Interstate 35 in Merriam has reopened following a nearly two-hour closure after a disturbance involving two vehicles during which shots were fired, and both vehicles drove the wrong way on the highway Sunday night, police said.

Officers responded to the disturbance shortly before 8 p.m. near I-35 and West 67th Street, Merriam police said in a post on Facebook.

During the disturbance, the drivers of both vehicles entered I-35 from 67th Street, heading north in the southbound lanes. One of the drivers attempted to turn around and head in the correct direction, but collided with a vehicle that was not involved in the disturbance, police said. The second vehicle ran off the highway into the grass.

No one was seriously injured. Police said they had one person in custody.

As detectives worked to determine the circumstances leading up to the incident, southbound I-35 was closed. The highway was reopened shortly before 10 p.m. Detectives finished their on-scene investigation, and all roads in the area had reopened, police said in an update on Facebook about 5:20 a.m. Monday.
