Man dies in hospital after shooting at apartment complex in south Kansas City

Update: Police identified the man as 18-year-old Ke’Ron D. Brown.

One man is dead after a shooting in an apartment parking lot in Kansas City’s Marlborough Heights neighborhood Tuesday, police said.

Officers responded around 10:45 p.m. to the 8200 block of President Court on a sound of gunfire call. While officers were en route, the call was updated to a shooting.

According to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman, callers reported the sound of gunfire and said they believed someone was shot nearby.

Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds lying in the parking lot. Emergency medical services were called to the scene and paramedics transported the man to a hospital, Becchina said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the man who was shot had an interaction with people in the parking lot that escalated to gunfire. Unknown suspects then left the scene, Becchina said.

Early Wednesday morning, Becchina said detectives were notified that the man died at the hospital from his injuries.

Police have not yet publicly identified the man who died.

Detectives have been searching for witnesses and spoke to people who were in the area when officers initially arrived for the shots fired call. Crime scene personnel were processing the scene for evidence.

The killing is Kansas City’s 128th homicide of 2025, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 137 homicides.
