One man shot to death at Kansas City convenience store, police say

One man is dead after a shooting at a convenience store in Kansas City Tuesday night, police said.

Officers responded around 8:40 p.m. to the 7000 block of Prospect Avenue, near Gregory Boulevard, on a call about a shooting. They were led inside a store where they found a man with gunshot wounds unresponsive on the ground, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman.

Officers provided medical aid to the man while they called emergency medical services to the scene, Becchina said.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates that there were numerous people inside the store when an interaction between the man and others escalated to gunfire, Becchina said.

Detectives were talking to witnesses and people who were at the convenience store when officers initially arrived. Crime scene personnel were processing the scene for evidence.

Police said in a statement that they have not yet identified suspects and no one was in custody as of Tuesday night.

Police have not yet publicly identified the man who was killed.

The killing is Kansas City’s 127th homicide this year, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.

At this time last year, Kansas City had recorded 137 homicides.
