KCPD reclassifies homicide case, says 15-year-old was shot in Independence, not KC
Kansas City police have released new details in the case of a 15-year-old boy fatally shot on Sept. 2.
After “extensive investigation,” according to KCPD spokesperson Capt. Jake Becchina, investigators believe the fatal shooting of Isaiah Wilson occurred in Independence.
Wilson arrived at St. Luke’s Hospital on Sept. 2 with a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead a short time later, KCPD spokesperson Alayna Gonzalez said at the time.
Investigators initially reported that Wilson was walking outside near East 88th Place and James A. Reed Road when he heard several rounds of gunshots and was struck, Gonzalez said.
Since the investigation has since been moved to Independence, it’s unclear where the shooting may have actually taken place.
Wilson called a friend for help, who picked him up and took him to the hospital.
The shooting marks the 8th homicide in Independence in 2025, compared to seven at this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.
