Police identify teen killed in afternoon shooting near south KC park

Police have identified a teenager shot and killed two days before his 16th birthday near a park in south Kansas City.

Isaiah Wilson, 15, arrived at a hospital Tuesday afternoon with a gunshot wound. Medical staff performed life-saving measures, but doctors pronounced Wilson dead a short time later, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department.

Officers responded to St. Luke’s East Hospital around 2:30 p.m. and began a preliminary investigation. Police said Wilson was walking outside near East 88th Place and James A. Reed Road when he heard several rounds of shots and was struck by gunfire, Gonzalez said.

Wilson called a friend for help, who picked him up and took him to the hospital, Gonzalez said.

The location police provided for the shooting was across the street from James A. Reed Park.

It was not immediately clear if Wilson was targeted by the gunfire.

The killing is Kansas City’s 109th homicide this year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 108 homicides.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
