Shooting victim dies after being found lying in the road in Kansas City, Kansas

Update: Police identified the man killed in the shooting as 23-year-old Enrique Martinez-Vasquez of Kansas City, Kansas.

One person is dead after a shooting early Friday in Kansas City, Kansas, a police spokeswoman said.

Officers responded to the shooting about 1:40 a.m. in the 1500 block of Greeley Avenue, where they found the victim lying in the street, said Nancy Chartrand, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. Emergency medical workers pronounced him dead at the scene.

Detectives identified the victim as Enrique Martinez-Vasquez, a 23-year-old resident of Kansas City, Kansas, police said Friday afternoon.

Police said “persons of interest” are cooperating with the investigation. Police have not announced any arrests, and have not released further information about what led up to the shooting, including a possible motive.

The killing is the city’s 18th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 19 homicides reported at this time last year.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department’s major case unit is investigating the homicide. Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
