Kansas woman gets probation after deadly hit-and-run in KU cancer center garage

A judge granted probation to a Kansas City, Kansas, woman who ran over and killed a 94-year-old man in the University of Kansas Cancer Center parking garage last year.

Kelsi Ann Carmack, 25, pleaded guilty in June to one felony count of failing to stop at an accident that resulted in a death.

Last week, Johnson County District Judge Niel B. Foth sentenced Carmack to two years and seven months in prison, but ordered her to serve three years of probation instead. If she violates the terms of her probation, she could be required to serve the prison sentence.

The deadly hit-and-run crash occurred around 7:50 a.m. March 28, 2024, at the cancer center’s parking garage at 2650 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Westwood. Jail records show that Carmack was arrested later that afternoon.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office identified the man killed in the crash as William J. Ward Sr., of Leawood.

At the time of the crash, Carmack worked for the University of Kansas Health System, but she was fired following the crash, according to court documents.

Earlier this year, Ward’s family reached a $250,000 wrongful death settlement with Carmack and Ward’s insurance company, with $50,000 paid by Carmack’s auto insurance company and $200,000 from Ward’s auto insurance company.
