Police find man shot to death near apartment complex in Kansas City
Update: Police identified the man as 37-year-old Ashton Hams.
One man was killed in a shooting near an apartment complex in Kansas City Wednesday night, police said.
Officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to the area of East 10th Street and Prospect Avenue on a call about the sound of gunshots. When they arrived, they found a man on the east side of the intersection lying unresponsive on the ground, said Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman.
Paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the man deceased.
According to a preliminary investigation, one or more suspects fired shots that struck the man at East 10th Street and Prospect Avenue, police said in a news release. Numerous callers reported hearing the sound of gunshots, Becchina said.
Investigators were looking for witnesses and processing evidence Wednesday evening. Becchina said in an email that since the shooting happened near an apartment complex, detectives are hopeful that there are witnesses.
The killing is Kansas City’s 117th homicide this year, according to data maintained by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 115 homicides.
