A Kansas City man is facing child endangerment charges after police say he fled from the scene of a car wreck last week with a child.

Tyrin Mosby-Sherman faces one count each of endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest/detention/stop by fleeing creating a substantial risk of serious injury and leaving the scene of an accident, according to Jackson County court documents.

Around 6 p.m. Sept. 10., officers with the Kansas City Police Department were on patrol near East Linwood Boulevard and Bellefontaine Avenue when they witnessed a wreck, according to a probable cause statement in support of Mosby-Sherman’s arrest.

They observed a man, believed to be Mosby-Sherman, standing next to the driver’s side door of an Audi A5 that had crashed into the back of a white SUV, according to the probable cause statement.

Court documents state that Mosby-Sherman retrieved a “small child” from the backseat of the Audi before fleeing on foot while holding the child’s hand.

Officers allegedly saw “a skinny black object protruding from the front right pocket” of Mosby-Sherman’s jacket, which they believed was an extended firearm magazine, according to the probable cause statement.

Mosby-Sherman fled toward East 31st Street, running between houses while holding the child’s hand, court documents state. When officers caught up with him, they commanded the man to lay on the ground of a driveway in the 3100 block of Bellefontaine Avenue.

Mosby-Sherman followed the officer’s commands, placing the child underneath his body.

When officers told Mosby-Sherman to let the child walk to police, he told officers “he can’t do that,” and “he won’t,” according to the probable cause statement.

The child was eventually released to officers and .40-caliber Glock handgun with a 30-round extended magazine was found in Mosby-Sherman’s jacket pocket, the probable cause statement reads.

Also found was a bottle of blue pills, four cellphones and three vehicle key fobs, according to the probable cause statement. Three of the pills were later identified as Oxycodone and the remaining three were identified as Alprazolam. Police foundA$910 in Mosby-Sherman’s left pocket along with 83 Suboxone tablets in his right pocket, according to the statement.

A computer check later revealed the Audi A5 was stolen from Kansas City, according to the probable cause statement. Several clear sandwich bags, a sandwich bag box and a single Suboxone tablet under the steering wheel were found in the vehicle.

No booster seats were located in the vehicle.

In an interview with police, Mosby-Sherman denied being in a car accident, court records state. He told officers he was probably stopped because officers “saw his Glock’s extended magazine.”

Mosby-Sherman allegedly admitted to officers that he had Oxycodone because he “was shot several years ago,” according to the probable cause statement. He told officers the pill bottle did not have a sticker because he “is always dropping stuff, and he doesn’t want someone finding his name and address.”

Mosby-Sherman posted a $1,000 bond, according to court documents. He is set to appear for an unspecified hearing on Oct. 16.
